Geese eat a lot more than is "natural" anyway, which leads to their distorted livers. It's their way to stock up as much fat and calories as possible before the migrating season, where they fly a good deal without ever eating. The force-feeding with the funnel is to start the process manually so that they're ready for the Xmas season (and not for migration). It's killing animals for our selfish eating pleasure all right, but certainly not barbaric.
