I'd say you're right, though I'm not sure the majority of interpretations take into account what Shakespeare had expected (not that he's in much of a position to expect much from anyone at the moment, regardless).

I actually think he must have preferred men, considering how unimportant his female leads usually are, but perhaps I'm wrong and it's just a historical thing, different context and all.
