Fic recs

I promised Padmoony a couple of links and thought I might as well do so publicly.

Novel-length: can't be read all at once, is long enough for several comfy evenings
Novella: anything longer than a single LJ entry, that can be read in one sitting
Short fic: one LJ entry

Comedy: you'll spew tea on the keyboard
Funny: you'll laugh aloud
Dramatic: lots of action
Dark: no fluffly bunnies in sight
Angsty: someone dies

WARNING: I'm telling you whether there's a happy ending or not, don't read further if you don't want to be spoiled that way

Draco/Neville

Lust Over Pendle, by AJ Hall: link to the website where it is, together with other stories from the same arc. Mostly gen, AU (canon to book 4 or so). Funny, happy end. Several of the fics are novel-length. Dramatic

Snape/Lupin

Power Play by Smoke, NC-17, very porny, novella, dark with happy ending

Harry/Lucius

Reliquary, by Pushdragon, AU. They're both older and thus different - Harry is all manipulative too! -, without being OOC. Hard to put a genre on it - dramatic, reasonably dark, but definitely not angsty. Novella

Droit du Seigneur, with a link to her website for other fics: dark, unhappy endings, AU, NC-17, very porny. Novella

Harry/Draco

Mudhoney by Calanthe. AU, canon to book 6 I guess. Series of novellas. Most emphatically NC-17. Very porny. Happy ending. You have to friend [livejournal.com profile] calanthe_fanfic to access the link

The Sacrifice Arc by Lightning on the waves, 7 books, all novel-length, AU - what would've happened if Harry had had a twin brother. Dramatic, gen at first, very slow evolution into Harry/Draco

Corridors of Power by [livejournal.com profile] byblythe. Harry's in the Chamber of Commons, Draco's in the House of Lords. PG-13, delightful (political) reading, series of short fics

Harry/Snape

Cambiare Podentes: Invocare, plus sequel, Cambiare Podentes: Madurare, by Jordan Grant. Slavefic, novel-length, both of them. AU, canon to book 6. Dark, but with happy ending. NC-17

Harry/Ron

Two Households by [livejournal.com profile] mad_martha, AU (Harry's Slytherin), novel-length, happy ending. PG-13, you need to friend [livejournal.com profile] marthas_library to read the NC-17 bits.

Harry/Ginny

This Means War, by [livejournal.com profile] jeconais, novel-length, PG-13, funny, bordering on crack

The Silent Siege, The Veil of Memories and The Chalice of Morgridar (this last one's a WIP) by [livejournal.com profile] swishandflick05, all of them novel-length, PG-13, dramatic, very canon up to book 5 and up to book 6 for the last one.

Harry/Bellatrix

Check Melusinahp's rec list

Hermione/Snape
(incredibly popular pairing despite glaring absence of Lucius)

The classics are at Witchfics or at Obscurus books.

I loved:

The Fire and the Rose (canon to book 4), PG-13, romance, novel-length, happy ending

Big Name Death Eater by Shiv (AU, canon to book 5 or so), PG-13, comedy, novel-length, happy ending

Tyger, Tyger by Bloodcult of Freud, AU, canon to book 5, dramatic, R, novel-length, happy ending - can't find a link right now, will ETA later on. It was on AFF.net I think but they've revamped the site and now I don't want to stay there long enough to search it. It's on Digital Quill for sure but the site's down at present.

Wrapped Around Your Finger by JadeOrchid, canon to book 5, novella, NC-17, dark but with happy ending

What E'er Therein Is Promised by Deeble, canon to book 5, novel-length, R, happy ending

Lots of newer fic at
Ashwinder or at [livejournal.com profile] hgss_digest. I don't think Digital Quill is purely Snermione but the stuff there is very good. The site's down for maintenance now but it ought to be back soon.

I stopped reading HG/SS a while ago so there must be lots of newer stuff worth investigating.

Hermione/Lucius

I've recced it over at the crack broom

Ginny/Pansy

Matching Muff Matrimony by eloiselovelace, R, novella, comedy

Other - crossovers

The boy who arrived, by Ishtar. Crossover with the Addams family. Gen. Very funny. Multi-chaptered, might be novel-length someday. Warning: WIP

The Code of the Potters by mashplum, Crossover with Jeeves, gen, short, very funny

Sites I love

[livejournal.com profile] crack_broom: lots of recs by lots of different people, sorted by pairing. It has more slash than het but very little femslash, oddly enough.

[livejournal.com profile] slavefics and its partner comm [livejournal.com profile] ds_fics. Not only HP, great source to expand your readings in other fandoms or in original fic.

[livejournal.com profile] minor_pairings: everything's in the title. Fics vary in quality but the pairings are indeed original.

2007/11/29, I'll try to update it with recs later as I remember more and/or read further.

ETA: this list is more likely to be updated over at Insane Journal (same username) than here.

Very interesting. Thanks!

And in doing it I discovered several updates. I think I need RSS feeds or something!

It's still far from complete though, I'll try to be good and update it often.

What a fab list of recs - and thank you for including me!

It was your first suggestion that caught my eye. I wrote a Draco/Neville for a fic exchange a couple of years ago, and 'Lust over Pendle' was the only other D/N fic I could find. People really rave about it, but, and this sounds terrible, I've never been able to get past the first chapter. There's something about it that I couldn't get my head around. So sadly, I've never got as far as Draco or Neville being in it. I'm sure it's a classic, and I wish I could read it, but for some reason I just can't. There is definitely something wrong with me!

She has a very peculiar writing style that I love, but I can see how others could be rebuked by it. But it also was one of the first fanfics I read and it definitely opened my eyes on how "minor" canon characters can be most developped at length - it's what fanfic is all about (that, and the porn!)

Sometimes I wish I were a newbie again with all this still ahead of me :)

I am woefully underdeveloped when it comes to having read the basic fandom fics. I got stung a couple of times in the early days by reading H/D fics that everyone was raving about. I didn't enjoy either, so I sort of decided I wouldn't read any of the big fics after that. I think when something has such a massive build up you need it to be simply incredible, and finding it's not can be hard to take.

I bet I've read substantially less fic than almost any other fandom person I know. Bad kitty.

You make up for it by writing :D

I'm so happy you liked my story! Thanks for including it.

DH is also very pleased that you included his. A good day all 'round.

I loved it! though you were really evil, posting it chapter by chapter although it was already complete. *is victim of entitlement syndrom*

[identity profile] deeble.livejournal.com 2007-11-30 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, it's better than the usual system of posting some chapters, pausing for six months, posting another one, pausing for a year and three days, posting the next one, etc. etc. :-D

[identity profile] foudebassan.livejournal.com 2007-11-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true :D

Someone have recommended The Fire and the Rose story to me recently - and you have just provided the link! Thanks!
