I've just finished Ring Up Jeeves, wherein a character named Bulstrode appears on the very same page as a character named Trelawney.

Guess where She Who Must Not Be Named got her inspiration?

Have you ever read Villette? That features a pretty if silly girl named Ginerva whose companion falls in love with and becomes engaged to their former teacher. Said teacher is incredibly strict, strident, and sarcastic and nearly all the girls despise him.

By Charlotte Brontë? No, but given your description it sounds like I'm going to, very soon!

(Doesn't that make HG/SS practically canon?)

Yes, that was my feeling. I read the book before HP came out, when it was recommended by Joanna Russ, so when Ginny was revealed to be Ginevra it all sort of clicked into place for me.

Good grief! It's been a few years since I read that book but now you mention it, the parallel is obviously there. Good spot.

I've read a few Jeeves but I don't remember this one. Must read. And Villette too.

*looks in terrified pleasure at the to-read list getting longer and longer thanks to excellent recs from friends"

I know that feeling. Especially as I'm at my parents', and their bookshelves are well-stocked :D

No, no, no... It's always everyone else getting their inspiration from her! Tsk; shame on you for forgetting.

~surreptitiously adds to reading list~

DH and I laughed out loud when we came to that part -- sometime in the last year or so; we've been reading the books in order. I think we found at least one other Pottery name in the series.

A pity PG Wodehouse died before HP got published, then... ;-)

One name I could have put down to coincidence and an equal love for bizarre patronyms, but two, and on the same page... *snigger*

When I read Maisie Dobbs, by British author Jacqueline Winspear there were two parallels to HP and I meant to post on my LJ (except I haven't been on LJ for weeks again now). I can't remember the first one, but the second is a man named George who loses his ear. Is She Who Must Not Be Named skimming from adult literature?
