I've always found her a bit stupid :( But well, at least she's pretty.

Hello, she commited suicide by drowning herself....

Well Juliet kills herself too so it's more of a general Shakespearian theme... I'm not sure the meme's all that good but 17catherines is planning to read every single play by Shakespeare and I'm curious to see whether the part she assigns herself is consistent with the meme's opinion :)

Well, I got Beatrice, who I certainly like a lot (not least because Benedick is so much fun to spar with, though I would probably have to kill him if I lived with him). But it's a highly annoying meme if you are oblivious about designers and don't recognise most of the songs mentioned.

Clearly, I'll have to do a better one myself. And - how useful! I have a week off coming up reasonably soon...

Which Shakespearian Leading Lady are You?

Beatrice: Much Ado About Nothing

You, while in reality an honest woman, seem to enjoy taunting men about their inability to control women’s sexuality. You are in control, a true heroine yet not quite a feminist. Your intelligence and wit makes you a noble match for anyone who can appreciate your superior combination of strength and poise. Keep kicking @$$ and looking beautiful doing it!

I would have loved to get Viola from Twelfth Night, but unfortunately she wasn't even an option.

I take it you're not a big fan of Juliet?

*g*
Personally, I always consider Romeo & Juliet the stupidest of Shakespeare's plays. Honestly, a few hours before meeting Juliet Romeo was pining for Rosalind, and if the families hadn't made such a fuss the two kids would hve fallen out of love just as quickly without tragic deaths. So I could never see the epitome of true love in the story as everybody claims there is.

It's true lust, not true love! They don't want to be together, really, they just want to fuck. I think the story's more about the hate between their families

But Romeo has a way with words... I probably wouldn't say no to a man who could speak like him. But that makes me a bit angry with Juliet as she only nods and smiles and answers with platitudes.

Considering the upbringing Juliet had, it's a wonder she can say anything at all. Romeo isn't really shy about what he wants, after all.

But you're right, between them it's lust, not love.

I've always liked Tybald and Mercutio better, anyway.

I have to admit that even though I know he was a Shakespeare actor even before starting on-screen acting, I've never seen him in a theatre production.

I would guess that the last photo on this site is from that production.

He does! It's astonishing how some people look a lot more handsome at 50 than at 20 (astonishing, but reassuring). It's the same for Pierce Brosnan, he was pretty ordinary when he was younger.

Well there must be a few exceptions. Take Dan Radcliffe, he's easy on the eyes and yet barely legal. By the time he's 50 he might develop a pot belly and baldness!

You're far too smart to be Juliet. You'd make a great Mercutio, though, with all the bawdy double-entendres.

Of all the women we've spent time with in Shakespeare so far, Eleanor of Aquitaine is the only one who is consistently bright and assertive (and a tad underhanded, but so much the better). This will change, of course, but it's a little depressing nonetheless.

Hmm... maybe you'd enjoy being a girl dressed as a boy getting the man who loves her but does not recognise her when she is dressed as a boy to court her male persona in order to practice courting a woman, the better to win her when she is a girl? I can sort of see you as Rosalind, but I haven't read As You Like It for years, so I can't be sure...

Catherine, who is very much looking forward to Rosalind herself

But I don't want to be a man. *pouts*

I'll leave Eleanor to [livejournal.com profile] alienor77310, as she already has the nickname to fit the part. But I do have Branagh's film on DVD, and I'm looking forward to watching it... In the meanwhile I'll just be a Molieran heroine. All his plays are written to fit his own troop, so there's always a strong, bosomy woman somewhere in the cast.

Ah yes - how could I forget the French princess in Henry V? I'll be very interested to know what you think of her! Actually, the French princess in Love's Labour's lost is more fun, really. She gets lots more to do.

And now I really MUST read some Molière.

Ah, I've yet to read Henry V. I do have the DVD (by Laurence Oliver) so that's an incentive to get started if there ever was one.

Oh, I'll be doubly interested, then. I haven't seen the Olivier version, but I gather it was very pro-war propagandistic (written late in WW2, or possibly just after); Branagh's I have heard described as almost a parody of this - I honestly can't see it as a parody, but he is definitely emphasising the horror of war rather than glorifying it. So I'll be very interested to read your review, if you write one.

Well if Shakespeare had intended to give them a life he'd have added a personality to the characters, wouldn't he? As it is they're just designed to fuck, once it's done they have nothing left to do but die?

I've just read the latest Muse chapters, btw. I'm very curious about what comes next, I sense another big development but am unsure what it could be. Thank you for letting me read.

Which Shakespearian Leading Lady are You?

Katherine: The Taming Of The Shrew

You are a woman to be reckoned with. You are not only strong willed but are extremely emotionally involved as well. This combination is volatile and could lead to violence. Nothing standing between you and your wants is acceptable. Therefore, it is important to remember the difference between wants and needs. As Kate inevitably does, channel your energies into a healthy relationship. Play with your partner; you’re the master at it anyway!

~grins~

It always seemed to me as though 'Romeo and Juliet' was the Shakespearean version of the modern-day platitudes of 'saving yourself' and 'sex is teh ebil'. The truly tragic thing is that we're expected to think those kids were actually in love rather than just in lust and in the throes of a bout of rebellion.

Snerk.

I'd say you're right, though I'm not sure the majority of interpretations take into account what Shakespeare had expected (not that he's in much of a position to expect much from anyone at the moment, regardless).
